Finding Proportional Pants For Short Men
DEAR ANNE AND NAN: Are there any
catalogs out there selling top name-brand jeans and other types
of pants (such as Dockers) with a 28-inch inseam? I am married
to a short man. He stands about 5 feet 5 inches on a good day
and has an inseam of 28 inches. No companies make jeans with an
inseam of 28 inches, and we — as well as other short people. I'm
certain — am at our wits' end. It's truly puzzling to me if
they have 1116 big and tall men's catalogs, someone wouldn't
have come up with one for short people. All of my husband's
pants have to be shortened drastically because the shortest
inseam length the manufacturers make is 29 or 30 inches, and the
poor man is swimming in them. Levi's used to make them, but we
were told they don't make them any longer. It appears no one
does. What's a short person to do? I'm certain I speak for short
men everywhere when I say, why not make a short man's catalog?
Can you possibly help me with my dilemma?
- LYNNE E. BRYANT WOODSTOCK, IL.
DEAR LYNNE: We can recommend a couple of catalogs for short men. We had a
nice chat with a gent at a store in Milwaukee called Napoleon's
Tailor. He explained to us the problem isn't simply the length
of the inseams but the proportion of the trousers. What your
husband needs are pants with a short-rise, meaning the distance
from the crotch to the waist is shorter than the distance for
regular pants.
